Iranamadu reservoir declared open after renovation

Colombo (News 1st) - The renovated Iranamadu reservoir was declared open by President Maithripala Sirisena this morning. Reconstruction of the Iranamadu reservoir, which is the largest reservoir in the North began in 2015. The Iranamadu reservoir that spans across 21,000 acres, will benefit 9180 families and provide water for farmers in the area to cultivate during both the Maha and Yala seasons. The renovations cost more than Rs. 2 billion and was funded by the Asian Development Bank and the Ministry of Local Government and Provincial Councils. President Maithripala Sirisena addressing the event stated that reconstruction was halted in 2012, and was resumed after he assumed the Presidency. He went on to state that the water which is released from the reservoir is an important step towards strengthening reconciliation with the people of the north. He stated that the completion of the reconstruction of the Iranamadu reservoir is a great deed which brings happiness to everyone. He went on to state that this project will support in improving the economic standards of the people in the north, raising their standards of living and most importantly strengthening reconciliation between the people
