What happened in parliament today?

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Today's parliamentary session commenced at 10.00 am this morning (November 15). In his opening statement, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said that as a result of the no-confidence motion that was passed in parliament yesterday that the Prime Ministerial position nor the post of Chief government whip will be valid. Later, when the Speaker permitted Mahinda Rajapaksa to make his statement, Parliamentarian Dinesh Gunawardena, who stood up from his seat repeatedly requested the speaker to present the letter he had received from the President yesterday (November 14). Mahinda Rajapaksa made his statement thereafter. He said that instead of the 225 revolving around this dispute to allow the 15 million people to use their vote at a general election and allow them to decide. Rajapaksa continued to say that according to the constitution of the country that the mandate is not with the parliament but with the people of the country. Rajapaksa said that he is happy to hear the JVP making a comment yesterday that they will agree to any proposal to dissolve parliament and go in for a general election. He further questioned the stance of the UNP with regard to an election and requested all 225 MPs to join together to go for in an election. Commenting on the prevailing economic status of the country, the Prime Minister said that the estate workers face an issue with regard to their wages and that their request for Rs. 1000 is a fair struggle. "Even when the price of Petrol in the world market fell, according to the fuel price formula, prices rose. Therefore, today we will reduce the price of petrol further" added the Prime Minister. Further, he added that they expect an independent speaker and that he is dismayed over the Speaker's partisan actions in favour of his party and the so-called Western friends. However, at the end of the Prime Minister's speech, an uneasy situation broke out from within the Parliamentary chambers. The situation erupted with Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella saying that the parliament does not have any confidence in the Prime Minister's speech.
