Colombo (News1st) – A group of party representatives met at the Parliamentary complex on Tuesday (Oct 30) under the auspices of Speaker Karu Jayasuriya to discuss the current political situation.
Speaking to the media following the meeting UNP MP Ajith P. Perera stated that when a new Prime Minister is appointed the Parliament should immediately convene and hold a vote in order to see whether that particular person has the majority or not.
He added if a No-Confidence motion is put forward against this so-called Prime Minister out of 225, a considerable amount will cast their vote for the motion.
UPFA MP Dinesh Gunawardene who was also present at the meeting stated that they have got to know that 126 members have written to the speaker to convene the Parliament, he explained that all the speaker can do is to write to the President and nothing else because the power to reconvene Parliament is with the President.
He added that the Parliament has been prorogued until the 16th, the Budget speech was on the 5th now that the Finance Minister has been changed their concern is not on Parliamentary traditions but the change of Government.
Following this journalist questioned if this meant that they will create a government and he responded saying that the UNPers are joining them even today.
Addressing a letter to the Speaker UPFA General Secretary Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has requested to safeguard the privileges and rights of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa in the Parliament.
Meanwhile, veteran journalist Kumarasiri Hettige has been appointed as the Secretary of Parliamentary Affairs to the New Prime Minister. Kumarasiri Hettige was a professional journalist and also served as Secretary of Parliamentary Affairs when Mahinda Rajapaksa was serving as the President.
