Colombo (News1st) – A group of UPFA MPs convened a media briefing today, during the briefing MP Dullas Alhapperuma spoke on the prorogation of Parliament.
He noted that since 1970 Parliament has been prorogued on 24 occasions adding that some of these actions were disgraceful. Allahaperuma highlighted two such instances, one was the prorogation of Parliament for 24 days when an impeachment motion was brought in while the other was the dissolving of Parliament when D.E.W. Gunasekara was to report his COPE report to Parliament. Allahaperuma stated that Ranil Wickremesinghe was behind both these despicable acts.
The MP went onto note that western nations and the state department see the prorogation of Parliament for 11 days as a violation of democracy. He questioned why these same countries and institutions did not voice their concerns when the previous Government took steps to delay local government elections by 2 and a half years.
Commenting on the UNP protest that was held today, MP Dullas stated that a majority of the UNPers that attended the event weren’t there to protect Ranil Wickremesinghe, instead, the MP stated that they were there to chase him away and choose Sajith Premadasa as the next leader of the party.
The MP added that Ranil Wickremesinghe could have threats against him so reducing his security detail to 10 personnel was a wrong move on the part of the Police adding that the Police should provide the necessary security. He should receive protection as he is a 4 time Prime minister and 4-time opposition leader stated the MP who also stated that he would not be getting the position of opposition leader this time around due to his actions. Dullas noted that they are in favour of R. Sampanthan retaining the post of opposition leader.
Allahaperuma also stated that the public no longer has to worry about the fuel price formula kicking in on the 10th of every month as they will be taking steps to do away with the formula soon.
