Colombo (News1st) – Former Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa says that he will not accept a position in the current government. He expressed these views after appearing in court in connection to the case filed against him for causing the government losses of Rs 11.4 billion by authorizing operations of Avant Guard.
Rajapaksa noted that he had no intention of taking up positions in the current administration as it is only a caretaker Government which will only be there for a limited period. He noted that the current Government will change as soon as an election is held. Gotabaya added that the administration should now focus on providing concessions to the general public with a handful of ministers running the operations.
A journalist questioned the former defense secretary, a US national himself, of a statement by the US Department of State which called for Parliament to be convened immediately. Gotabaya responded to the question by stating that the power to summon parliament rests with the President in accordance with our constitution and that the American ambassador in Sri Lanka has no control over it.
When questioned about a statement made by Ranil Wickremesinghe where he claimed that he remains the prime minister of the country, Gotabaya responded stating that Wickremesinghe could remain at Temple trees and allow Mahinda Rajapaksa to manage the country.
