COLOMBO (News 1st) – MP Ranjith De Zoysa demands that the Indian Government should provide an explanation as to whether the Indian national under the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department is an agent of RAW.

Attention was drawn towards an article carried by The Hindu Newspaper about a statement said to have been made by President Maithripala Sirisena at the cabinet meeting last week. According to the report, President had mentioned that “the Indian national must be a RAW agent trying to kill me.”

Issuing a communique in response to the conundrum regarding the alleged assassination plot of the Sri Lankan President the Indian Prime Minister’s office said, the reports are malicious. The communique further said that the Sri Lankan President himself had stated that the reports were utterly baseless and false.

Meanwhile, on the 17th of this month, Leader of the National Freedom Front, MP Wimal Weerawansa addressing a media briefing had said that the Indian national in question had arrived at his house twice. MP Weerwansa said that upon further investigation into the whereabouts of this individual it was revealed that the name he had produced in Sri Lanka was not the same name he carries in the RAW organization.

Weerawansa continued to say that the man’s name is Rajendra Kumar and also revealed his RAW identification number (R.B. 317217/V.J), He first came to the country before the 2015 Presidential Election as a person seeking political refuge and has since been working as a spy for RAW according to Weerawansa.

The MP added that it is because of all these reasons that the Indian High Commission was so quick to state that he was a mental patient the moment he was arrested. Although certain political statements made by MP Wimal Weerawansa are questionable, one cannot simply disregard this information revealed by him.

Neither the Indian Government nor the Indian High Commission has responded to the allegations made by MP Weerawansa thus far.

Also expressing views on the matter, UPFA MP, Ranjith De Zoysa said that the Indian High Commission is responsible to inform whether or not the Indian is a RAW agent and deny allegations. MP De Zoysa continued to say that either the government should make a statement saying that he is not a spy and that this is a false allegation or MP Weerwansa should be arrested over making false revelations.

He added that it is however clear that no one is concerned about the statements about the alleged plot to assassinate the President and the former Defence Secretary by RAW.
