High Court of Maldives overturn decision to jail Gayoom

Colombo (News 1st) - The High Court of Maldives has overturned the Criminal Court decision to jail former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. The opposition leader was sentenced to one year and six months by the Criminal Court after his arrest during the state of emergency in February. He was sentenced on an obstruction charge for refusing to hand over his mobile phone to the police. Maumoon has recently been released on bail along with his son MP Faris Maumoon, and son-in-law Mohamed Nadheem.
