Unusually high temperatures across the country

Colombo (News1st) -  The Department of Meteorology stated that temperature in many areas of the island exceeded 35° Celsius. According to the Met. department high temperatures were recorded from the districts of Monaragala, Vavuniya, Anuradhapura, and Polonnaruwa An increase in the overall temperature of 4° Celsius has been recorded from Hambantota during the past 24 hours, as of 8.30 this morning (September 09). Monaragala experienced a temperature of 36.3°C, Vavuniya 36.2°C , Anuradhapura 35.4°C, Polonnaruwa 35.2°C while the temperature in Nuwara Eliya was reported at 22.5°C. Meanwhile, an increase in the overall temperature by 3°C was reported in the Jaffna, Badulla, Kurunegala, Vavuniya and Nuwaraeliya areas during the past 24 hours, as of 8.30 this morning. Director of the Department of Meteorology Anusha Warnasooriya states that they cannot expect considerable rainfall until the end of September. Meanwhile, News1st cameras were able to capture a number of instances of leaking water pipes in the Kurunegala town at a time when the entire country is going through a dry spell. Area residents charge that a pipeline near the Kurunegala public market has been leaking for over a week. The pipe near the Gatuwana junction has also been leaking for the past six months.
