Japanese typhoon kills 10

Reuters -  A powerful typhoon killed 10 people in western Japan, the government said on Wednesday (September 5), as an airport company started to transfer some 3,000 stranded passengers by boats from a flooded airport. Jebi, or "swallow" in Korean, sliced through the country's west on Tuesday (September 4). It is the most powerful storm to hit Japan in 25 years and follows heavy rains, landslides, floods and record-breaking heat that killed hundreds of people this summer. Thousands of tourists stayed overnight at Kansai International Airport, the nation's third busiest and an important hub for Japanese companies to export semiconductors. Television footage showed staff handing out drinks to people camping out in the departure terminal. Airport officials began transferring people to nearby Kobe airport by high-speed boats and buses on Wednesday morning to the relief of the stranded passengers. It was uncertain when the airport would reopen and some roads and train lines in the affected areas were still closed.
