Colombo (News 1st) - Reports have emerged that the mobile phones belonging to several heads of media institutions had experienced signal issues on Thursday (Aug 23rd) On the 8th of August, the Daily mirror quoting the Joint opposition reported that the "Desperate Government was tapping phones." The report says that a special unit has been established for the above reason in the Nugegoda area. UPFA MP Dullas Alahapperuma also spoke about the same subject on the 8th of August. He stated that the Government had imported high tech devices to tap phones from Japan and that funds allocated for the development of military communication had been used for this purpose. Allahaperuma stated that the unit has been established in Nugegoda and is being monitored by a DIG. The UPFA MP stated that the said unit was listening in on conversations of journalists, members of the Opposition and members of the Government as well. The leader of the National Unity Alliance, Azath Salley states that the general public voted Mahinda Rajapaksa out of office in 2015 due to similar reasons. He called on the Government to dismantle the unit that had been set up in Nugegoda or the people of this country would be forced to raid it themselves. Salley explained that even though Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe claims that the current administration has provided media freedom, this is the ground reality. Reports are emerging that there were several complaints that have been made regarding signal issues in phones belonging to persons of interest. In addition to monitoring your communications, there are other sinister implications of your phone being breached. Such breaches could allow vested parties to gain access to your passwords and personal data. They can use this data to compromise any number of systems that use your personal data for verification such as your bank accounts.
