COLOMBO (News 1st) – Following repeated rooftop protests by female inmates of the Welikada prison, the Department of Prison has launched a special investigation to look into the activities of the ruly inmates. The investigation will be conducted by a Prisons Superintendent.

Prisons commissioner and media spokesperson Thushara Upludeniya said legal action will also be taken against those who had vandalized property.

The second rooftop protest by female inmates took place on Monday (Aug 20th), against the transfer of female inmates convicted of drug offences. More than 50 inmates who had behaved in an unruly manner have been transferred to several prisons such as Galle and Kalutara.

The Prisons Spokesperson also added that statements have been recorded from over 100 female inmates who had behaved in an unruly manner.
