What happened to the bus strike?

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The All Ceylon Private Bus Employees' Association announced a single day all island strike action on Thursday (August 16). The strike action launched by the All Ceylon Private Bus Employees' Association, against the new traffic fines, didnot recieve the support of the Private Bus Owners' Association. As a result transportation in most areas of the island continued without disruption. All routes beginning at the Fort bus depot, continued as per their usual schedules although a shortage of buses was seen in certain areas early this morning (August 16). Buses to Borella, Battaramulla, Maharagama, Piliyandala and Nugegoda continued as usual. Standard and luxury buses traveling the route between Galle and Colombo were not in operation today although alternate buses traveling the same route had operated as per usual. While Kandy saw the usual number of buses over the course of the day, there was a shortage of buses this morning. Buses from Kurunegala to Anuradhapura and Kandy were not in operation. Other buses operating from Kurunegala were in operation as usual. Meanwhile, Chairman of the Lanka Private Bus Owners' Association, Gemunu Wijerathne stated that the efforts put in by the group that had launched a strike action had completely failed because of the positive efforts put in by the owners and drivers of the buses. Also expressing views on the matter Minister of transport and Civil Aviation, Nimal Siripala De Silva stated that if such a shortage occurs that they would resort to bringing in army buses and that he had instructed the IGP to take special actions to punish the people that had acted in an unruly manner, in order to stop the private buses from operating today.
