COLOMBO (News 1st) - Addressing a meeting with a group of lawyers in Ambalangoda on Saturday (August 11) former President Mahinda Rajapaksa commented on the judicial system of the country. Mahinda Rajapaksa stated that this is the first time in history a court is being used for political vengeance and that certain cases are chosen in meetings held at the Ministry of Justice. Rajapaksa continued to say that Ministers Rajitha, Champika, and few others recommend cases to the Attorney General, who then passes it on to the Chief Justice. State Minister Ajith P. Perera reacting to this statement noted that during the previous administration those in power had a different set of rules than the rules that the general public had to follow. The State Minister stated that there have been more than 120 investigations over black money and that only 19 cases have been filed. Perera expressly stated that the Attorney General and the Chief Justice decide on the cases independently. The state minister went on to note that no one, not even the President or any of the Ministers, could influence or interfere with this process, unlike during the previous administration.
