REUTERS – The Toronto International Film Festival, commonly known as TIFF, announced its line-up on Tuesday (July 24).
The Canadian film festival, like the Venice Film Festival which happens a week before, is seen as an indicator of which films might be in contention for awards season in Hollywood.
Among the films chosen were addiction story ‘Beautiful Boy’ starring Steve Carell and Timothee Chalamet, true story ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?’ starring an unrecognizable Melissa McCarthy, multi-generational film ‘Life Itself’, and racial drama ‘The Hate U Give’.
Other films include true story ‘The Old Man & The Gun’, which stars Sissy Spacek and Robert Redford, ‘The Sisters Brothers’ starring Joaquin Phoenix and Jake Gyllenhaal about a man trying to evade two infamous assassins, and Venice film festival opener ‘First Man’.
Three films from Cannes also feature – the Palme D’Or winner ‘Shoplifters’ by Hirokazu Kore-eda, ‘Dogman’ by Matteo Garrone and ‘Everybody Knows’ by Asghar Farhadi, which opened the Cannes film festival.
The Toronto Film Festival runs from September 6 through to the 16.
