COLOMBO (News 1st) - Six-time Oscar nominee Glenn Close on Monday (July 23) beamed on the red carpet for her new film 'The Wife', which many critics are saying could lead her to Oscar success come awards season. The film, which was originally launched at the Toronto film festival last year amid rave reviews, was expected to be part of last year's awards season. However, the film's release was postponed to ready it for this year. 'The Wife' tells the story of an elderly couple who appear to have the perfect marriage. However, when her husband Joe (Jonathan Pryce) gets informed he's won the Nobel Prize for Literature, Joan (Close) begins to unravel - especially after Joe's unofficial biographer (Christian Slater) makes claims about their relationship. As she becomes aware the revelations may come out, themes about female subordination and male power come into play - issues that have been a hot topic in Hollywood in the last year.

"It's still quite astounding for me that the film took 14 years to get made and who knew that it would be incredibly relevant? Though I think a story like this that's so specific about a very, very complex human relationship is always relevant and people will always take away from it whatever they bring to it." - Glenn Close

She added "I think that as a couple you can't come out of this and not think about what your relationship is."

"I think the great thing about it is that it's an intelligent movie. We don't get too many of those these days. We get great stories and great epic films but intelligent films well told we don't get too many and I think this is one of them." - Jonathan Pryce

The film also explores the choices Joan made as a young woman. Annie Starke plays the younger version of Close and had an advantage in mirroring Close's performance as Glenn Close is her real-life mother. "It was a very tricky part to say the least but it was wonderful," she said. "We worked hard on this character for a long time. We put our blood, sweat and tears and I'm just so happy that we're here and it's been so well received." 'The Wife' is released in U.S. cinemas on August 17.
