COLOMBO (News 1st) – The World Choir Games 2018 more commonly known as the Choir Olympics, organized by the Interkultur Foundation was held for the 10th consecutive year at Tshwane, South Africa starting on the 4th of July and successfully drew to a close yesterday. (July 14)
The game is held biennially (every even year) bringing together over 35,000 choristers from over 70 different countries regardless of their country, race or genre of music and was initially founded with the motive of “Singing together brings nations together”. It is also currently the largest choir competition held across the globe.
Two Sri Lankan choirs, the Royal College choir, and the Soul Sounds Academy choir were granted the privilege of competing this year. Both teams had previously participated in the 4th Asia Pacific Choir Game, through which Royal College emerged victoriously.
However, the Choir games held this year marked its closure with Royal College of Colombo successfully bagging Silver medals in three different categories of the competition bringing unanimous glory to the grounds of Sri Lanka.
The final award ceremony that was held at the Moreleta Church adjudged winners from categories of Young Children’s Choirs, University and College choirs, Mixed Chamber Choirs, Female Chamber choirs, Male Chamber choirs, pop choirs, and also Folklore and indeed the Royalists were talented enough to emerge silver medalists in the categories of Youth Choir, Pop Choir, and also folklore with accompaniment.
The victorious Royal college choir comprised of 40 boys ranging from the years of 12 to 19 truly brought out the best of Sri Lankan culture when they took to stage wearing the national dress for their performance at South Africa.
