121 female prisoners transferred from Welikada

COLOMBO (News 1^st) - 121 female prisoners were transferred from Welikada to Angunakolapelessa. Prison Spokesperson Thushara Upuldeniya said this step was taken due to over-crowding at the Welikada Prison. Currently, the Welikada prison is home to 521 female inmates. However, according to the Prison Spokesperson only around 160 inmates can be held there. Angunakolapelessa Prison Superintendent A.W.S. Dhammika said the inmates who were transferred from Welikada reached Angunakolapelessa this evening. Until now only 28 Female inmates were being held at the Angunakolapelessa Prison. He further noted that the relatives of the prisoners who were transferred has been formally informed through a letter.
