COLOMBO (News 1st) - The school principals and education sector trade unions have launched a trade union action today. It was launched against the people being granted appointments in the education sector claiming that they have been subjected to political revenge.
School teachers have refrained from reporting for duty today at a number of schools across the island. Members belonging to the education sector of 11 trade unions are currently taking part in this trade union action.
News 1st correspondents in Colombo noted that the educational activities in schools in the Colombo District were not disrupted by the trade union action. Asoka Vidyala and Yashodara Balika Vidyalaya in Colombo had operated as usual.
However, only three teachers had reported for duty in the Bangadeniya Government School in the Puttalam District. The teachers in the Anuradhapura district had also participated in the trade union action. In Polonnaruwa, the Minneriya National School, as well as the Ananda Balika Vidyalaya, operated as usual.
News 1st correspondent further stated that members of a number of trade unions including the Sri Lanka Education Administrative Service Union are currently staging a demonstration opposite the Ministry of Education.
