COLOMBO (News 1st) - Protests were staged in several parts of the country today (June 14), against companies that grant microloans.
Protesters in Vavuniya claim that the loans which are given at high-interest rates targetting rural women have led to several suicides and family units falling apart. The protesters handed over petitions to the Northern Province Governor and District Secretary.
A demonstration was also held in Kilinochchi on Thursday (June 14th) against microfinance companies. The protesters handed over a petition to the district secretary to be given to the President Sirisena Prime Minister Wickremesinghe and the Central Bank.
A similar protest also took place in Mullaitivu today.
