TRCSL urged to crack down on illegal cable TV operators

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The National Movement of Web Journalist's has requested the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) to conduct a proper inquiry over illegal cable TV channels and institute appropriate action. A document detailing institutions that operate illegal Cable TV channels, addresses and contact numbers were handed over to the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission by the National Movement of Web Journalist's According to the data, there are 18 illegal cable TV operators in the Jaffna District, 04 in the Trincomalee district, 02 in the Ampara District and another 13 service centres in the Hill Country. Chathuranga De Alwis of the National Movement of Web Journalist's stated that they request that action be taken against these Cable TV operators in the North and East who threaten national security and have neglected to pay taxes. He added that they have made this request from the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission and that the TRC had promised to expedite its actions. In the recent days, News 1st exposed the loss of life caused by these illegal cable TV operations in the Jaffna District. One incident was reported from Nelliady, Jaffna on the 23rd while 04 more were reported dead in Wadamarachchi North.
