COLOMBO (News 1st) - Former General Secretary of the United National Party, Tissa Attanayake called on the Mahanayake of the Malwathu Chapter,  Most Venerable Thibbotuwawe Sri Sumangala Thero yesterday (June 09). Following the meeting, he was questioned by media on what could happen if the UNP fields Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as the candidate for the 2020 Presidential election. Attanayake said that he can boldly say that the general public would reject his candidacy as the people want a fresh outlook. He added that they want a new party, a new action plan, a new leader, a new country and a new United National Party. When asked if he that thinks that Ranil Wickremesinghe should retire, Attanayake simply said that there should be a change in the party. He did note however that most of the woes of the UNP have been caused as a result of handing ministerial portfolios to friends.
