Colombo (News1st) – The Railway Technical Services Trade Union Committee says they have decided to extend their trade union action by a further 48 hours. Initially, their trade union action was due to conclude this evening.
However secretary to the committee, Kamal Peiris said a decision to extend the strike was based on what he called unfounded accusations levelled at the trade union as well as threats to fire workers who are engaging in the trade union action.
Railway officials said that they were able to provide services, as usual, yesterday despite the strike adding that 2 train turns had to be cancelled due to the strike. Additional Superintendent of Railways, Dr. Wijaya Samarasinghe said a complaint has been lodged with the Criminal Investigations Department about sudden technical errors in several the engines and damages caused to railway property in several areas including the signal system.
