COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Department of Meteorology forecasts showers exceeding 100mm in several parts of the country over the weekend. The department noted that the showery conditions are due to a disturbance in low atmospheric areas in the country. Authorities claim to be spending millions in wastewater management, however, roads in Colombo turn in to waterways even with the slightest rainfall. Meanwhile a special programme to raise awareness on disaster preparedness took place today (May 18). The campaign organised under the Gammadda disaster management initiative was held at the Kasthuriwatta Balika Vidyalaya in Baddegama. The programme was organised for a second time due to a request made by local authorities and area residents. Participants were given practical training on how to prepare for floods and how to save lives during a flood. The programme took place with the assistance of the Asia Pacific Alliance on Disaster Management (A-PAD), Police Life Saving Unit, Civil Defence Force and several other state institutions.
