COLOMBO (News 1st) - The 16 SLFP MPs who left the government called on His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the Archbishop of Colombo. The meeting took place at the Archbishop's house in Colombo on Friday (May 11). During the meeting, the Archbishop of Colombo warned of more issues if difficulties faced by the people are not solved. His Eminence stressed that a large number of people cannot afford three meals a day and that a large number of people have lost confidence in the government. He noted that the key objective at the moment should be to develop the country as a whole and not a small group. The Archbishop also noted that political leaders need to understand whether adopting various ideas and practices from other countries is good for Sri Lanka and highlighted the need to be sensitive to the economic and cultural values the people aspire for. His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith went on to note that the President needs to stand firm and that the ppl expect this from him.  He reminded the members of the SLFP that if the people's aspirations are not met then they would decide what needs to be done. In response, former Minister S.B. Dissanayake noted that they are attempting to pull the entire SLFP group out of this Government adding that the President has not shown any objection towards this.
