Political arena reacts to arrest of corrupt officials

COLOMBO (News 1st) - This week, the President's Chief of Staff Dr. I.K. Mahanama and the Chairman of the State Timber Corporation P. Dissanayake were arrested for soliciting a bribe. A number of comments were expressed in this regard during several forums today (May 5). Minister of City Planning and Water Supply, Rauff Hakeem said that the action taken against the corrupt officials proves the transparency that was put championed by the Government of Good Governance National Organizer of All Ceylon Peasants' Federation, Namal Karunaratne noted that they will be closely monitoring the situation to see if the genuine action will be taken against the corrupt. Former MP Chandrasena Wijesinghe addressing the media said that as someone who is committed towards good governance, he is pleased to see institutions functioning independently to tackle corruption. While appreciating the qucik action taken by the President to punish the officials the former MP recalled what the Prime Minister did when word of the central bank bond scam first came to light. Wijeysinghe noted that back then the Prime Minister ensured that Mahendran retained his position and did everything possible to stall the investigations into the scam.
