COLOMBO (News 1st) – The United National Party Protective Organisation convened a media briefing in Dambulla to comment on the party’s actions.
Speaking at the media briefing, Chairman of the Organisation, Duminda Bandaranaike, said that they oppose the new appointments made by the UNP. He notes that PM Ranil Wickremesinghe is not a suitable leader for the current political context. Bandaranayaike noted that the rank and file did not request for changed in the office bearers of the party but instead called for a change in the leader of the party.
General Secretary of the United National Party Protective Organisation, S. R. M. Wickremesinghe, called on MPs and members of the UNP Working Committee to rise against the leadership of the UNP. Deputy Chairman of the Organisation, Saman Pathirana, warned if the UNP leadership is not handed over to a younger leader, a large group will be brought in front of Sirikotha to commence a satyagraha campaign.
The United National Freedom Front also convened a media briefing today (April 26). Its General Secretary, Maithri Gunaratne, challenged UNP MPs to come forward and state publicly whether they can win an election at rural level with the reforms they have made. He said hundreds of thousands of UNP supporters in villages are suffering as the hopes they had on the UNP government are now shattered.
“Ranil Wickremesinghe can play any game and win the Working Committee and Parliamentary group. He can play any game in Parliament and win as well. But can he win an election? No, he cannot. This is why the UNP’ers are suffering,” he added.
Speaking on the Satana political programme on Sirasa TV, Western Provincial Councilor Srinath Perera also commented on the UNP reforms. He said if people who are connected to the bond scam, which caused a huge loss to the nation, are proposed for the party leadership then it clearly means the party accepts rogues and the bond scam.
