COLOMBO (News 1st) – The Commissioner General of Labour has decided to take legal action against the management of the Ballapitiya rubber factory where five people died following inhalation of ammonia gas.
Commissioner General of Labour, A. Wimalaweera, said they will be prosecuted for unsafe working conditions. Meanwhile, the Central Environmental Authority decided yesterday (April 20) to temporarily suspend the environment permit of the factory.
Director of the Waste Management Unit, Ajith Weerasundara, said the decision will be valid until investigations regarding the industrial accident are complete. Meanwhile, the Manager of the Ballapitiya rubber factory has been remanded until the 25th of April.
