The Cold War is “back with vengeance,” said the UN’s Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, who also warned about the dangers of escalation over Syria.
The US and its allies are considering of launching a missile attack on Syria after the alleged chemical attack, an action Russia has stated would risk beginning a war.
An allegation was made by Russia on the UK faking an attack, which Britain dismissed stating it to be a “grotesque, blatant lie”.
Antonio Guterres, seemingly alarmed by the speed of events, told an emergency meeting of the UN security council that the current volatility could have profound ramifications in the Middle East and beyond.
The Cold War, which followed the Allied victory in World War Two, saw the US and its allies facing off for decades with the Soviet Union, of which Russia is the main successor state.
