National debt passes 10 trillion mark

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The latest Weekly Economic Indicators released by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) reveals that the total national debt has increased by over 27%. According to the CBSL Sri Lanka's total debt value at the end of September 2014, stood at around Rs. 7.369 trillion. By December 2016, that value had increased to approximately Rs 9.387 trillion. According to the Weekly Economic Indicator published by the Central Bank by the 6th of April 2018 that figure had risen to approximately Rs. 10.269 trillion. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe speaking on several occasions has said that the government is repaying the debt that was obtained by the previous government. However former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has refuted these claims and has questioned the borrowing habits of the current administration.
