COLOMBO (News 1st) – News 1st’s Gammadda Movement launched yet another initiative to end a battle for drinking water in Jayasirigama, Pannala.
The 3.5 Million Rupee project was fully sponsored by MAS holdings.
With the drying up of wells in the area, 260 families had to depend on the little water they received from the Pannala Pradesiya Sabha once a week.
The residents of Jayasirigama stated that the water they receive is nowhere near the amount they need for the day to day requirements.
The project was led by Journalist Sampath Dissanayake and is said to benefit 800 families in the area.
The first phase of the project saw the construction of a well in the locality which enabled water to be transported to fill tanks 700m away.
The second phase of this project involved the construction of water storage facilities while the third phase, involved the distribution of water via pipes, allowing the residents to satisfy their requirements.
