COLOMBO (News 1st) - SLFP members elected to local government authorities in the Polonnaruwa District were sworn in before President Maithripala Sirisena today (March 26). 58 SLFP members elected to eight local government authorities in the Polonnaruwa District were sworn in at Royal College, Polonnaruwa. Members were sworn in to the Thamankaduwa Urban Council, the Thamankaduwa Pradeshiya Sabha and the Dimbulagala, Welikanda, Hingurakgoda, Lankapura, Medirigiriya and Elahera Pradeshiya Sabhas. The newly elected local government members were gifted with biographies Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela. Speaking at the event President Maithripala Sirisena said that no matter who is celebrating victory at the elections with excitement, none of the political parties which contested the election have succeeded in receiving more than 40% of the people's vote. Furthermore, he stated that they did a analysis of the results on how it would impact a parliamentary election and that the main finding of this calculation was that the party which has won the most local government authorities would only have received 103 seats in parliament. President said that accordingly if this were a parliamentary election, no single party would have been able to form a government. President stated that a political party must have at least 112 seats in parliament in order to form a government.
