COLOMBO (News 1st) – In recent reports, it was found that water being distributed to the Nuwara Eliya municipality has been contaminated with fecal matter. Eight water sources located within the Piduruthalagala Forest Reserve supplies water to the Nuwara Eliya municipality. Water from these sources are being gathered into tanks and is distributed after adding Chlorine. However, in a recent report, it was found that the water has been contaminated with fecal matter. The Nuwara Eliya Regional Health Services Office had tested 255 water samples, which showed the presence of a fecal Coliform bacteria named “E. coli”. The health officials note that there is no possibility of faecal material contaminating the water in the original source. Health Officials claim, the underground water pipe system is a dilapidated state and therefore faecal material contaminate the water. On March 19th evening, Police and the Health Services Office toured several areas in Nuwara Eliya and uncovered certain businesses that were disposing waste directly into the water canals. Police thereafter intervened to summon the Nuwara Eliya Urban Commissioner and the Public Health Inspector for a lengthy discussion on solving the matter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgKqBTP_0SE
