The recently built section of a pedestrian bridge near Florida International University collapsed on Thursday (15th March) killing 6 people and injuring at least 10 others.

The people in the vicinity said the collapse sounded like multiple bomb blasts.

The bridge was built to connect school campus to the nearby neighborhood, where many of the university students live. This was done with the purpose of increasing student safety.

It is still unclear how many people are trapped in at least eight vehicles beneath the bridge, officials said.

According to

Dr. Mark McKenney, Director of General Surgery at Kendall Regional Medical Center.

ten people were treated for injuries, including two in "extremely critical condition".

The 950-ton, 174 foot bridge was erected on Saturday (March 10) in just six hours over an eight-lane motorway, said a story posted on the college website.
