Temporary block on Facebook and other Social Media likely to be lifted

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Information Technology industry in Sri Lanka believes the temporary block imposed on social media following the incidents reported in Digana will be lifted in the coming days. Dr Kithsiri Manchanayake, Chairman of the Federation of IT Industry in Sri Lanka stated that he believes that certain IPs has been released and Whatsapp is already operating. Furthermore, it was stated that according to his knowledge Viber will also be restored by tomorrow (March 11). Dr Kithsiri Manchanayake also commented on what measures need to be adopted to prevent the spread of false and racist material across social media. According to Dr Manchanayake, they are prepared to fully support the government and a committee involving Sri Lanka Police, CID, The Private Sectors and ICTA should be appointed to monitor activities. Further, he stated that in addition, the Government can speak to the International Companies that operate these platforms and remove all the material that incite racism and hate.
