Update: The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka says it has taken measures to temporarily block access to Social Media Networks.
Accordingly, the TRC notes that social media websites including; Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Viber, YouTube, Instagram will be temporarily blocked until further notice.
In an earlier statement, the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) of Sri Lanka stated that it has taken measures to monitor social media websites.
According to an officer at the TRC, this measure was taken following a request made by the Ministry of Defence.
Further, the TRC states that it took measures to monitor social media websites as false information is spreading via those platforms.
The TRC officer said as a result of this measure, access to social media including Facebook as well as downloading will be slow.
The TRC requests the public to act responsibly when adding material on social media platforms.
