COLOMBO (News1st): Investigations have revealed that the National Identity Card of Shashi Weerawansa has been issued without proper procedure being followed at the Department for Registration of Persons.

The case was examined over allegations made that, Shashi Weerawansa had obtained a diplomatic passport after submitting fake documents.

Then Commissioner General of the Department for Registration of Persons, Jagath P. Wijeweera, appeared before the court today to give evidence on the matter.

In his evidence, he stated that Wimal Weerawansa contacted him via telephone and as a favour, requested him to prepare a National Identity Card for his wife to leave the country urgently.
He admitted that as a result, he ordered his personnel to issue a National Identity Card for Shashi Weerawansa through the one-day service facility.

A police report and a driver’s licence were the only documentation submitted, he said.

The Commissioner General of the Department for Registration of Persons further noted, the provided documents of Shashi Weerawansa stated her age as 39.

Adding to evidence, he said, there was a disparity in Shahi Weerawansa’s name in her driver’s licence and police report. However, despite that, the National Identity Card was released on the basis that the proper documentation will be submitted late

Questioned by the Magistrate with regard to whether proper documentation was later submitted,  he said he is unaware of the same as he was transferred.

The case was ordered to be postponed until April 23, by Colombo Chief Magistrate Lal Ranasinghe Bandara.
