COLOMBO (News 1st): Army Commander Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake presided over an event at the 56th Division Command.The Army Commander declared open a new administrative building for the 56th Division in Kokkeliya, Vavuniya.

Thereafter, he responded to questions raised by the media on the explosion in Diyatalawa.

Army Commander, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake stated that he immediately took action and appointed a six-member committee led by the Major General to investigate the Diyatalawa explosion.

Further, he stated that based on the current information, it has been clear that the explosion inside the bus was caused by a live hand grenade. He also stated that this will not be the final decision.

He stated that they believe it was only one hand grenade and he requests the public to stay calm.

“Do not be misled by the false rumours spread by a group claiming there was a threat to national security,” said Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake

He stated that if there is something of the sort the Sri Lankan Army, Air Force, Navy and the Police will look into it. “We have the strength within us. Such a situation will never arise,” the Commander pointed out.

Journalists also questioned the recalling of Brigadier Priyanka Fernando, Minister Counsellor (Defence) attaché to the Sri Lanka High Commission in London.

Responding to questions, he stated that as the Commander of the Sri Lankan Army he is responsible for the officer’s security.

Therefore, he has recalled Brigadier Priyanka Fernando for discussion and he will remain in the country. Speaking of the situation,  he stated that after he meets him they will decide on what measures need to be taken.

Later on, someone else will decide whether what he did was right or wrong.

“This officer is here not because his term has ended. I think it is wise for him to move away from this incident, taking into account his security.”
