Former Defence Secretary, Gotabaya Rajapaksa will not be the Joint Opposition Presidential Candidate in the 2020 race.

This was revealed by JO Leader Dinesh Gunawardene today (January 28).

The reason being that Gotabaya Rajapaksa is a citizen of the United States of America.

Having a citizenship in another country disqualifies one from contesting in Parliamentary or Presidential election in Sri Lanka and many other countries.

This fact was revealed by MP Gunawardena in an interview with the ‘Ceylon Today’ newspaper.

MP Gunawardena added that Rajapaksa is not ready to rescind his US citizenship “under any circumstance”.

The article goes onto state that neither Dinesh Gunawardene nor Podiujana Peramuna Chairman Professor G.L. Peiris would be running for President in 2020.
