The improper renovation of a road in Kurunegala has caused an even greater issue to several villagers. This road is used by the people living in the villages of Kandurukumbura and Thowathura which fall under the jurisdiction of the Kurunegala Divisional Secretariat.

According to the villagers, in December last year a 400 metre stretch of this road was renovated using concrete. The renovation was part of a project under the Infrastructure Facilities Development Initiative implemented by the Ministry of National Policies and Economic Affairs.

The renovation is  being carried out by a private construction firm. The locals claim that days after the renovation several sections of the concrete cracked, and the matter was brought to the notice of the Divisional Secretary.

Following his intervention, the construction firm which undertook the initial renovation has given an very surprising solution to the issue.

A resident explained that as a solution, they poured tar over the concrete and added sand. But with the current hot weather, the tar melts and sticks onto their footwear, the residents lament.

At a time when much is spoken about road development, the people of these villages question, what is the point of doing so, if one cannot even rectify a simple issue as this.

News 1st made several attempts today to contact E.M.M.S Ekanayake, the Divisional Secretary of Kurunegala over the matter. These attempts  proved unsuccessful.
