A brawl at the Uva Provincial Council premises sent four PC members to the hospital today (January 25).
The brawl broke out when a group of UNP councilors were attacked by supporters of the new Provincial Education Minister Sendhil Thondaman.
Thondaman is a member of Ceylon Workers Congress.
Supporters of Sendhil Thondaman gathered in front of the Uva Provincial Council today to felicitate him on his appointment as the Provincial Education Minister.
Meanwhile, Uva Opposition Leader R.M. Ratnayake and UNP Councilors A. Ganeshamurthi and Upali Senarathna arrived at the Council for today’s sitting.
This was when things got out of hand.
Several minutes later, Sendhil Thondaman arrived after the group – ncluding Ganeshamurth i- left the scene.
Chief Minister Chamara Sampath, who previously held the education portfolio, was also present.
Then, following the felicitation, the group including Thondaman entered the Council.
Subsequently, the group including Ganeshamurthi returned to the council in a vehicle belonging to Minister Harin Fernando. And once again, Thondaman’s supporters attacked the group.
While Ganeshamurthi participated in the council sitting following the assault, the sitting was suspended after UNP councilors voiced protest over the incident.
Subsequently, two councilors who were attacked, were admitted to hospital.
Uva Provincial Councilor Ganeshamurthi joined the UNP from the Ceylon Workers Congress and also faced several allegations during his time at the helm of Tamil Affairs at the provincial Education Ministry. Ganeshamurthi was unable to attend council sittings on two prior occasions.
Sources say his seat on the council could have been annulled if he had not attended today’s sitting.
