A motorcyclist was killed in Kataragama last night (January 20) after being shot by Police.
According to Police, the motorcyclist had defied Police orders to stop the motorbike, which then lead to the shooting.
The deceased motorcyclist has been identified as P. Niroshan (25), a father of one from Nagaha Lane, Kataragama. He was working at the Pradeshiya Sabha.
Stones were pelted at the Kataragama Police by a group of people following the incident, Police Media Spokesperson Ruwan Gunasekara told News 1st.
ASP Gunasekara said that Police fired tear-gas at the group to disperse them.
A special CID team has been sent to Kataragama to probe the shooting, while the Police Constable who fired the gun has been remanded until January 30th.
More protests have erupted in Kataragama, demonstrating over the death.
While Police fired tear gas at the protesters, 59 of them -including 15 women- have been taken into custody for ‘damaging public property and obstructing the Police’.
The Protesters have also been setting tires on fire, said the Police.
The Minister of Law and Order Sagala Ratnayake tweeted today (January 21) saying he has instructed the police to work together with area residents to diffuse tensions in the area.
