The National Dengue Control Unit and Management and Science University jointly organised an awareness programme today, in the Delthara area in Piliyandala to emphasise the importance of the community involvement in Dengue control, the providing of knowledge in the future, and epidemic eradicating activities.
The Management and Science University has been working with several stakeholders including the Molecular Medicine Unit of the Kelaniya University, and the Chemistry Department of the Colombo University for several months now and has now been able to see the development of the concept of awareness programmes.
Several experts from health and educational sectors were seen at the event, namely:
• Mr. Sam Peiris – Managing Director of Management Science Institute, Sri Lanka
• Dr. Sarath Mandalawatta – Medical Officer of Health, Piliyandala
• Dr. Suranga Silva – Senior Lecturer, University of Colombo
• Piyavi Wijewardene, Project President Management Science Institute, Sri Lanka
According the Vice President, Prof Ali Khatibi, the prime and the long term goal of the community development project of the university is to reach several benchmarks through their programmes in the next few months.
The dengue awareness programme, which consists of door-to-door visits and mass gatherings, can be considered as the immediate contributory activity.
The university has also arranged a ‘zero waste’ awareness programme which comprises of workshops and affected people oriented donations along with other main parallel activities.
In addition, The ‘zero junk food’ educational programme, health camps that entail health check-ups and blood donations and ‘end-hunger’ programme, which introduce the chit/voucher systems.
