The Department of Meteorology forecasts several spells of showers will occur in North Central, Eastern and Uva provinces and in the Hambantota District, today.

It adds showers or thundershowers will occur over several places elsewhere after 2 p.m. with fairly heavy showers (exceeding 50 mm) expected particularly in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central Provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.

Serious damage was reported from Kotadeniyawa after gale-force winds swept across the area during a heavy downpour yesterday; 15 houses have been damaged. Police said, several areas including Badalgama and Walpita were also affected by gale-force winds. Uprooted trees have disrupted the supply of power to several areas, and damaged five vehicles. Police added several roads in the area were blocked by fallen trees.
