Lasantha Wicrematunge is a man who worked, tirelessly and fearlessly, -using his pen to safeguard the people’s right to information.

He continuously exposed fraudsters and criminals in Sri Lanka’s political arena.

And then, on one fateful day like today -nine years ago, Lasantha was assassinated.

Though it has been nine long years, authorities have still failed to hold anyone accountable for his murder.

January, 2009

The year 2009 dawned with a terror attack on the MTV/MBC studio complex in Depanama.

Armed thugs caused immense damage to the complex, destroying then-state-of-the-art equipment worth millions.

Lasantha Wickrematunge is one of the first who arrived at the scene following the attack on the night of January 6, 2009.

He served as the Editor in Chief of the Sunday Leader newspaper at the time.

Then he became a well known face to TV audiences across the country via the Newsline program telecast through the MTV/MBC network.

06/01/2009 – Lasantha Wickrematunge: “We must rise against these acts of terror and thuggery. This is not the first instance that such an incident has occurred. It may be that this is not the last either. Nevertheless, we are prepared to face this situation with caution. I must state clearly that all media institutions must be prepared to face this together.”

Lasantha’s prophecy that this would not be the last attack, came true just few days later.

That is when he himself became the target of an act of terror.

A mere two days after the attack on the MTV/MBC complex, Lasantha Wickrematunge was assassinated near the Attidiya Model Primary School.
