Several protests were staged across the country today, bringing traffic to a standstill in a number of areas including Colombo.

A protest obstructed the flow of traffic along the Mattakkuliya-Fort main road at Aluth Mawatha in Ibbawatte junction.

The protesters demanded that the road, that has been dilapidated for over one and half years, be renovated.

A News 1st correspondent noted, over one kilometre of the road is in a dilapidated state.

Meanwhile, a group of farmers from the Rajawela grama niladhari division, staged a protest opposite the Nawula Divisional Secretary.

Their demands included the payment of adequate compensation for the farmlands that were submerged following the Moragahakanda Kalu river irrigation project.

About 312 families engaging in farming staged the protest.

A News 1st correspondent said, officials of the Moragahakanda irrigation project and officials of the Divisional Secretary are holding discussions on the matter.
