March, 2017 – Trump announced that Obama’s aggressive vehicle fuel economy targets that were approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency would be reconsidered by his administration.
This would mean that more fuel cars will be on American roads which would slow the roll-out of less polluting, it would also mean that more greenhouse gas emissions and a less strong battle against global warming.
In 2009, the Obama administration adopted the fuel efficiency standards.
According to Obama, this was “a historic agreement to help America break its dependence on oil, reduce harmful pollution and begin the transition to a clean energy economy.”
The Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standard would link together and the Environmental Protection Agency’s greenhouse-gas standard.
Trump’s announcement earlier this year was one of the concrete steps taken by his administration to dismantle Obama’s policies.
Meanwhile California’s governor Jerry Brown has said, “if Trump relaxes emissions standards in the US car industry, it will lead to a wreck.”
According to Brown, China would be dominating in the world of manufacturing cars due to the promotion of their electric Vehicles.
He also added that US car makers and Trump were “half asleep” and have not yet understood the scale of challenge.
Brown also made it clear that the US needs huge amounts of investments on electric vehicles along with federal rules to encourage the purchase.
“There will be a serious threat to the US auto industry” – Jerry Brown.
