The Road Development Authority is constructing a road in an area which is considered an Environmental Protection Area in Hantana. The problem is that this construction is illegal, and the area is question is rich in bio diversity

The following statement by MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake in Parliament further proves the matter.

“I agree this extends to Meerigama, then to Pasyala and to Kurunegala. If you further extend it, it will reach Dambulla. Then like a distributor channel it will turn towards your residences. That is the main issue …”

The RDA is construction this road adjacent to the western end of the Hantana Mountain Range Environmental Protection Area.

The Hantana Mountain Range Environmental Protection Area is home to the catchment area which supplied water to the city of Kandy.

There is a gazette which clearly says that “if any form of construction to take place, proper legal permission must be obtained.”

However, the construction of a road continues in clear violation of the law.

Field officers have been dispatched to inquire into the matter and therefore he cannot comment to the media, said Central Province Director of the Central Environment Authority K.P.Welikannage.

Meanwhile the Governor of Central Province Niluka Ekanayake has objected to the construction.

“The Hantana area is for the general public and it must be respected. We will investigate the legal nature of what is taking place because we have a responsibility for the people …” he said.

So, the RDA is busy with an illegal construction in a place where nobody lives.

While they are busy with that, there are roads, most notably in Kochchikade, Kotahena, Bluemendhal and several other areas in Colombo which are causing daily traffic congestion.

Why? – They are dilapidated to a point where they are like mini water pools for small fish.
