Investigations launched into alleged ‘elephantine purchase’

The Ministry of Wildlife and Sustainable Development has taken measures to launch investigations with regard to the alleged claim that an elephant for the Kandy Dalada Maligawa was purchased from Myanmar for a sum of Rs. 260 million.

The Deputy Minister, Sumedha G. Jayasena says that according to the Diyawadana Nilame of the Temple of the Tooth Relic, Nilanga Dela Bandara, the said elephant was purchased on an animal transfer basis.

She added that investigations are under way to find the credibility of these claims.
