Close to 3,000 teachers who have served at national schools for ten years continuously, have received transfers effective from today.
Teachers unions have condemned the transfers, claiming that the Ministry of Education has taken this step in violation of accepted procedure. About 37,000 teachers serve at 353 national schools established across the country.
The Education Ministry says about 12,000 of these teachers have been serving at the same school for more than ten years. In order to address this situation, the Ministry has decided to transfer 3,000 Advanced Level teachers, as a first step.
The second phase of this programme will get underway in January 2018. Nine thousand (9,000) teachers from grades one to eleven will be transferred under the second phase.
