A court order-defying protest in Hambantota led to the arrest of MP Namal Rajapaksa and five others on Tuesday, October 10. The group have since been remanded after being produced before courts

They were called to Hambantota Police to record a statement in connection to the protest held in Hambantota on October 6.
The group was arrested after a statement was recorded, said Police Media Spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara.
The six, including MP Namal Rajapaksa, were produced before Hambantota Magistrate Manjula Karunaratne last night. Thereafter, they were remanded until October 16.
SP Gunasekara stated that 34 other suspects have been arrested and remanded in connection to the incident.
“On the 6th the incidents that transpired in Hambantota were illegal and disruptive. They disobeyed a court order and caused damages to public property as well. Police officers suffered injuries. They were obstructed from carrying out their duties”, said SP Ruwan Gunasekara.
Meanwhile, a group of individuals obstructed the road to the Tangalle Prison by setting tyres ablaze. Steps were taken to clear the road using a number of police teams and the Special Task Force.
